Many options for the integration of light-emitting diodes in membrane switch keyboards

The integration of LEDs is widely used in membrane switch keyboards. Electronics integrates the LEDs into the sandwich construction of the membrane switch keyboard.

LED types

LEDs are available in various types and colours. Some LED types can alternate between up to four colours in one diode, whilst the colour scales of others can be altered via the voltage applied.

Scales

An electrically controlled scale can be integrated directly into the membrane switch keyboard by installation of the LEDs in the geometrical pattern required - in a row, in a circle etc. The graphical print on the front can be used to indicate the measuring unit, in which case the scale component can be omitted.

Embossing over the LED

Embossing can be used to spread - and emphasize - the LED light on the surface of the front foil. In membrane switch keyboards with a construction height that is lower than the LED, embossing is used to make room for the LED in the design. The embossing for LEDs is usually carried out along with the embossing of the keys - at no additional cost.

SMD installation

At Electronics, LEDs are installed in an SMD line, which ensures a completely uniform installation. The LEDs are glued into place using a sophisticated method developed at Electronics.

Printed resistors

In designs with limited space or a lot of LEDs, resistors for the LEDs are printed directly in the keyboard, which is the most rational option - financially as well as in terms of design. The resistors are printed serigraphically using a graphite paste.

Photo diodes

Photo diodes can be integrated directly into the membrane switch keyboard, e.g. for the control of background lighting in the keyboard.

Hidden LEDs - dead front

LEDs can be hidden in the design, so that they are only visible when lit. This gives the graphical front a calm appearance - without any disturbing visible (unlit) LEDs.
